“I’m the adult I needed when I was a kid,” shares Shayla Edwards.
Inspired to offer a safe, supportive space for young girls, Shayla founded the Treasure Coast Girls Coalition in 2021. She recognized the lack of support she had growing up, and wanted to create a place for girls to access physical needs support, mentorship, career readiness opportunities, and more.
The program began in a middle school classroom and now has its own space. Serving girls ranging from 9 to 18 years old, the program currently has 27 participants.
Girls can access staple items, hygiene products, healthy food, and more throughout the week.
“If you’re hungry, you cannot learn,” Shayla says. “If you’re not okay in your mind, you cannot grow.”
The program also focuses on long-term growth through education, hands-on learning experiences, career exposure, and more. Girls can also learn culinary skills through a mobile food trailer, which also generates income to support operations.
“The way out of poverty is education, and our job is to help these girls believe they belong there,” shares Shayla.
Alumni are encouraged to return as mentors, interns, and role models for the next generation.
By supporting critical services and providing healthy food, your generosity helps lay a strong foundation for life-long well-being.
