About This Program
Diaper need is a hidden crisis affecting nearly 1 in 3 families in the United States. Diapers are as essential to a child’s health and well-being as food and shelter, yet many families are forced to make difficult choices—cutting back on necessities like food, utilities, or child care just to afford diapers. Some resort to unsafe practices such as reusing soiled diapers or leaving children in them longer than they should, which can lead to serious health issues and emotional strain.
The consequences of diaper need ripple through families, impacting not only children’s physical health but also parents’ mental well-being and economic stability. Parents may experience guilt, depression, and reduced self-esteem, and some are even forced to miss work or educational opportunities because childcare centers often require a supply of disposable diapers.
Despite its severity, diaper need remains largely invisible to the public. Federal assistance programs like SNAP and WIC do not cover diapers, and while food banks are widely known, diaper banks are not. To address this gap, the Treasure Coast Food Bank partnered with the National Diaper Bank Network in 2014 to launch a diaper distribution network across Southeast Florida, helping to raise awareness and support families in need.
