Older Americans Month 2016

May 1, 2016 - May 31, 2016

In 1963, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the month of May in honor of older persons across America. As the country pays tribute to its senior citizens during Older Americans Month, Treasure Coast Food Bank is committing to fight for better resources for the most vulnerable among them.

As the Baby Boom generation ages, the population of older Americans is expected to be the largest in the history of the country. For many, their golden years are marked by food insecurity.

“At a time in their lives when our seniors should be able to live comfortably, we see many struggle for basic needs, especially food,” Treasure Coast Food Bank CEO Judith Cruz said. “We encourage everyone to join with us in advocating for federal dollars available to help us feed vulnerable seniors.”

Take Action

There are several ways to get involved, locally, in the fight for the Treasure Coast’s most vulnerable seniors.

You may volunteer at our Distribution Center, where you’ll sort and pack food and essential non-food items for seniors and others who receive assistance from TCFB and its agency partners.  Please click here to sign up for a volunteer opportunity convenient to you.

You may also donate. For every dollar donated, we can provide eight nutritious meals to local seniors in need.

You can also become an advocate for local seniors.

This year, Feeding America and food banks across the country like Treasure Coast are committed to closing the Senior SNAP Gap.  Click here to help close the Senior SNAP Gap.

Feeding America has a list of other action steps you can take in May and throughout the year to speak up and raise awareness about seniors.
