FORT PIERCE, Fla.— More than 100,000 neighbors across Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties experience food insecurity, according to the latest data from Feeding America. Among children served by Treasure Coast Food Bank, one in four experiences food insecurity. The need is felt across the region, with food insecurity rates ranging from 13% in Martin County to nearly 19% in Okeechobee County.
This September, Treasure Coast Food Bank is calling on residents, businesses and organizations across the area to take action during Hunger Action Month, with events and activities designed to raise awareness and support neighbors facing hunger.
“Too many of our neighbors are working hard and still struggling to put nutritious food on the table,” said Judith Cruz, President and CEO of Treasure Coast Food Bank. “Our work is about making sure they have the food they need today while also connecting them with resources and opportunities that can help create greater stability for tomorrow. Hunger Action Month is a chance for our entire community to be part of that work and help build a stronger, more food-secure Treasure Coast.”
Light Up Orange
Businesses, organizations and residents across the Treasure Coast are invited to Light Up Orange throughout September to raise awareness of hunger in the community. Orange is the national color of hunger awareness. With a $15 donation, participants will receive an orange light bulb to display at their home or business as a visible show of support for neighbors facing hunger.

Sept. 26: 6th Annual Out Run Hunger 5K
Hundreds of runners and walkers will gather at Causeway Cove Marina in Fort Pierce on Saturday, Sept. 26, for Treasure Coast Food Bank’s 6th Annual Out Run Hunger 5K. The race begins at 7 a.m. and brings together runners, walkers, volunteers and supporters to raise funds that help Treasure Coast Food Bank provide nutritious food and other resources to neighbors across the region.
